This is a continuation of a topic that I started in August.
People in charge of classes, schools, and school districts usually want to do the right thing. Many times, though, they do not seem to use common sense when using discipline. The main problem is that they do not have a good sense for matching the severity with the severity of the infraction. Here are three more stupid school stories that show this ridiculous lack of judgment(chosen from a list of many):
*High-school freshman suspended for having a picture of a gun (Arizona, 2013). The gun isn’t his, McClaine assured the ABC affiliate in Phoenix. He found it on the Internet and liked it, partly because he is interested in serving in the military after graduation.
*Seven-year-old boy lobs pretend grenade during recess, gets suspended(Colorado, 2013). Even though Evans didn’t actually throw a grenade or threaten anyone, school officials reportedly told his mother that his creative play broke two crucial rules. The school’s list of “absolutes” includes no real or pretend fighting, no real or pretend weapons.
*PA girl back to glass after bubble gun suspension(PA, 2013). A 5-year-old kindergartner is headed back to class in central Pennsylvania after being suspended for comments she made to another girl about a pink toy gun that blows soapy bubbles.
I am not saying that these students should not have been punished. The problem is that the punishment was so much more severe than the severity of the misbehavior that it makes the people in charge look bad. A lot of times a zero-tolerance stance on discipline is the reason for these ridiculous actions. Zero-tolerance is not the answer. Reasonable rules and consequences are the only solutions to these problems.
