Last week I wrote about my opinion that classroom management is the number one problem in education today. This week, I will offer some possible solutions to this problem.
The task of drastically improvement classroom management is a big one. Here are a few thoughts for various groups that affect the process:
College Education Professors--The problem (and solution) begins in university education programs. Much more attention should be given to practical studies such as classroom management and less attention to academic, but less useful, studies.
Principals--The best thing that administrators can do for the cause of classroom management is to not assume that teachers should automatically be good at it just because they are certified. Also, an administrator can destroy a teacher's credibility with students by not supporting their classroom management process.
Teachers--I have written an entire book about how teachers can improve their classroom management. In summary, they should try to be as organized and reasonable as possible and only use anger as a last resort.
Parents-- One of the best things parents can do is to support the classroom management plans of their children's teachers as much as possible. Parents who talk badly about teachers at home can inspire bad behavior from their children at school.
