Last week I talked about rules with immediate consequences. Just about every teacher uses these. This week, I am going to finish this series about rules by discussing the key to truly reaching great classroom management—rules with eventual or no consequences. There is no need for a consequence other than the emphasis from the teacher. If a student repeatedly breaks these rules, the teacher may assign a consequence eventually if needed.
Why rules with eventual or no consequences are great:
*These kinds of rules allow a teacher to have specific rules for various situations. For example, in my classes if a student drops something on the floor, the rule is that you pick it up for them if you are nearby. These rules can cover anything.
*The teacher can have as many or as few of these kinds of rules as they want. There is no guaranteed number of rules that is best. Have a few, have a lot. Whatever you feel like keeping up with and enforcing is what is best for you.
*These rules help the teacher avoid too much record keeping. Teachers often hate the idea of record keeping when it comes to discipline. They will spend hours preparing a lesson. They will complain to everyone they know about how badly their classes behave. But they won’t take a few extra minutes during class to organize a discipline plan. Makes no sense to me. But that is a topic for another discussion.
*These rules help teachers achieve my number one rule of classroom management—NOTHING SHOULD HAPPEN IN YOUR CLASS THAT YOU DO NOT ALLOW TO HAPPEN! Period. Big or small. The teacher is in control. Students should adjust to the teacher when it comes to behavior, not the other way around.
