MYTH: NICE TEACHERS WILL BE RUN OVER BY THEIR STUDENTS.
TRUTH: A GOOD DISCIPLINE PLAN ALLOWS TEACHERS TO BE AS NICE AS THEY WANT TO BE.
It seems like I keep coming back to attacking the widely held idea that teachers have to be mean and intimidating to keep order, especially early in the school year. So be it. The reality is that teachers can smile and be friendly as long as they have a good discipline plan.
Discipline Tip of the Week:
You know you have a good discipline plan if its success does not depend on your emotions.
As I have stated before, the best discipline plans are those that include clear rules and consequences. The amount of anger or intimidation used by the teacher should have nothing to do with that. So if teachers want to be nice, they can be nice. If they want to be serious, they can be serious. The point is that teachers should be free to use their natural teaching style and personality without feeling like they have to pretend to be someone they are not just get keep order.
Please send me your questions and comments about discipline! I love hearing from people who are interested in the topic like I am. Thanks
