Last week I wrote about the first half of my list of important things to know about classroom discipline. Part II is below:
*Always remember that you have the power. Act like you are in charge at all times.
*Have your rules and consequences posted prominently in your room. Both your students and you should be reminded of them daily.
*Deal with as much as you can without involving the administration. Use administration as the final step of your consequences or for extreme misbehaviors only.
*Don’t expect parents to help you with discipline problems. You can hope they will, but don’t expect it. Do not use a parent call as a consequence.
*Do not go out of your way to try to be popular, or to be feared. Either one will make you compromise. Do what you do and don’t worry about it.
*Do whatever you can to lower stress. Don’t let the job take over your life. Find ways to have fun and not work around the clock on your lessons.
